What's Best, Refinishing or Restoring?

Restoring is generally to return an item it to its original form. This may include removing an inappropriate finish (we've all seen beautiful antiques covered with layers of caked on paint), or repairing and replacing missing or broken pieces, removing stains or burn marks, fixing cracks, splits and loose veneers or joints and many other forms of damage or wear and tear.

Refinishing is replacing the finish of an item and generally includes stripping off the old finish and re-staining or painting.

Restoring is best suited for old or valuable antiques or furniture – refinishing is best suited for newer items, or for personal preference (to lighten the stain of an item to match your newer furniture, etc...) If you do not know the age or value of your furniture its best to have an evaluation of the piece. We will help you to determine your item's worth and condition, then provide you with a plan and estimate to repair or restore your piece.
